The Virtual EMDR Tool I Use in Almost Every Telehealth Session
If you're an EMDR therapist who provides virtual therapy, you've probably wondered whether there's a better way to provide bilateral stimulation online.
When I first started doing EMDR through telehealth, I kept things as simple as possible. Like many therapists, I assumed that the basic features were all I needed.
But after spending more time with BilateralStimulation.io, I realized that upgrading to the Pro version didn't make my sessions more complicated, it actually made them smoother and more engaging for both me and my clients.
Here are a few of my favorite features:
1. More than just a moving ball
The standard moving ball works great, but the Pro version lets you customize the visual experience.
You can choose different images and animations depending on your client's preferences, making sessions feel more personalized.
2. Great for children and teens
If you work with younger clients, you'll appreciate the kid-friendly options.
Having different visuals can make bilateral stimulation feel less clinical and more engaging.
3. More movement options
One feature I use regularly is the ability to change how the target moves across the screen.
Having additional movement patterns gives me more flexibility depending on the client and the work we're doing. If you enjoy incorporating ideas from EMDR 2.0, you'll probably appreciate these options.
4. Upload your own backgrounds
This is probably my favorite feature.
You can upload your own images to the background, allowing you to create a calming, personalized environment for your clients.
Whether it's a peaceful landscape, nature scene, or another meaningful image, it adds another layer of customization to virtual EMDR sessions.
5. It's incredibly easy to use
One thing I love is that the additional features don't make the platform feel overwhelming.
Everything is intuitive, quick to adjust during session, and doesn't interrupt the flow of therapy.
As therapists, that's exactly what we want—technology that supports the work instead of distracting from it.
Should you Upgrade?
If you only use virtual EMDR occasionally, the free version may be enough.
But if you regularly provide telehealth EMDR sessions, I think the Pro version is well worth considering. The extra customization options have genuinely improved my experience as a therapist and made it easier to tailor sessions to each client.
